Microsoft Teams Busy Light That Changes Automatically

Show your Microsoft Teams status on your desk without lifting a finger. When your Teams presence changes — Available, Busy, In a meeting, Away — this USB light changes color automatically, so the people around you know before they interrupt. Teams sync is included in the free app.

How the automatic sync works

A lightweight app runs quietly in the background and watches your Microsoft Teams presence — the same Available / Busy / Away status your colleagues already see in Teams. When Teams updates your status (you join a meeting, start a call, or switch to Do Not Disturb), the app sends the matching color to the light over USB. The free app checks about every 30 seconds; paid plans check as often as every five seconds, with longer intervals when your status is steady or you're idle. No buttons, nothing to remember to open.

You sign in once with your work or school Microsoft account through Microsoft's official, secure login — Status Notifier only reads the presence signal it needs to pick a color. It never reads your messages or joins your meetings.

What each Teams status looks like

Available — GreenYou're free to talk.
Busy / Do not disturb — RedFocused, presenting or not to be disturbed.
In a meeting / On a call — RedTeams marks these as busy, so the light glows red.
Away / Be right back — AmberStepped out or idle.
Offline — GraySigned out of Teams.

Prefer your own palette? Every color is customizable in the app's LED settings.

A Teams status light for desk that people can see

A busy light only helps if people notice it before they interrupt. Put your Teams status light where people approach from — the edge of your desk, a shelf facing the door, or beside your monitor — so a colleague or family member sees red and waits instead of walking into your Teams call.

Microsoft Teams busy light — FAQ

Does it change automatically with my Teams status?

Yes — and it's free. The free app follows your live Microsoft Teams presence — Available, Busy, In a meeting or Away — checking about every 30 seconds, with no buttons to press. Paid plans check as often as every five seconds, with longer intervals when your status is steady or you're idle.

Do I need a work or school Microsoft account?

Yes. Microsoft only shares Teams presence for work or school Microsoft 365 accounts. Personal Microsoft accounts, such as Outlook.com or Hotmail, can't be used for Teams status.

Do I need admin or IT approval to use it?

Usually not — you install the app like any normal program and sign in with your own account. Some companies require an IT admin to approve new apps before their first use. If yours does, the app shows a one-click approval link to send to your admin; it's a one-time step for your whole organization.

Does it work with Teams on both Windows and Mac?

Yes — Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Get the app from the Microsoft Store, the Mac App Store, or as a direct download.

Will it show "In a meeting" and "On a call"?

Yes. Teams reports meetings and calls as Busy, so the light glows red during any Teams meeting or call, then returns to green when you're free.

Does it also work with Zoom, Slack and Discord?

Yes. The free app syncs one platform — Teams, Zoom or Slack. Discord, and connecting several platforms to one account, come with the paid plans; on Professional and Team plans you switch which one the light follows in a single click. See how it compares.

Is my Teams data private?

Yes. The app only reads the presence signal it needs to pick a color. It never reads your messages, records calls, or sells your data. Sign-in uses Microsoft's official secure login.
